Ridge height calculator — roof rise from span and pitch.
For a symmetrical gable roof, ridge height above the wall-plate reference comes directly from the horizontal run and roof pitch.
Calculate geometric ridge rise from span and pitch.
For a symmetrical gable roof with a centered theoretical ridge and equal pitches on both sides.
What is ridge height?
On this page, ridge height means the vertical geometric rise from the selected wall-plate/support reference to the theoretical ridge line. It is not automatically the total building height above ground.
Formula from span and pitch
For a symmetrical roof with equal pitches:
run = span ÷ 2
ridge rise = run × rise/run ratio
If pitch is given as an angle:
ridge rise = run × tan(angle)
Why ridge details matter
The geometric ridge line is a reference. A real ridge board or ridge beam has thickness and depth, and the final workshop geometry of the rafters depends on how that element is detailed. Keep the pure geometric rise separate from the physical ridge detail.
Asymmetrical roofs
If the two roof slopes have different pitches or the ridge is not centered, each side must be solved separately. The ridge position is the point at which the two roof lines meet at the same height.
Ridge height in Krokwio
Krokwio uses roof geometry as part of the complete framing model, so ridge position, rafter geometry and 2D/3D views remain connected to the same project inputs.
