Hip rafter calculator

Hip rafter calculator — length, plan run and three-dimensional geometry.

A hip rafter sits at the intersection of two roof surfaces. Its geometry combines a diagonal plan run with the vertical roof rise.

Quick answer: for a regular 90° corner and equal roof pitches, the hip plan run is common run × √2. The true hip-rafter length is then calculated from that diagonal run and the roof rise.

Step 1: common run

Start with the horizontal common-rafter run from the wall/support reference to the ridge reference. On a simple symmetrical roof this is derived from the building width and ridge position.

Step 2: diagonal plan run

At a square corner:

hip plan run = √(common run² + common run²)

which simplifies to common run × √2.

Step 3: true sloping length

The hip rafter rises by the same vertical roof rise as the surrounding roof surfaces. The spatial length therefore comes from the diagonal plan run and that rise:

hip length = √(hip plan run² + rise²)

Why workshop geometry is more than one length

A hip rafter can require bevels, drops or chamfers depending on how the surrounding rafters meet it and how the project is detailed. That information belongs on the element card with a clearly defined orientation and reference system.

Hip rafters in Krokwio

Krokwio treats the hip rafter as part of the complete hip-roof model. The element can be selected in 2D or 3D and connected to its card, dimensions and project documentation.

Important: these pages explain roof-framing geometry and workflow. Member sizes, connections, load paths and structural adequacy must follow the structural design and applicable regulations.

Hip rafter worked example: diagonal run and true length

For a regular equal-pitch roof with a 90° corner, take a common horizontal run of 3 m and a pitch of 35°. The horizontal hip run is 3 × √2 ≈ 4.243 m. The vertical rise is 3 × tan(35°) ≈ 2.101 m. The theoretical hip reference length is therefore √(4.243² + 2.101²) ≈ 4.734 m.

These are idealized centerline dimensions. Actual timber preparation depends on the ridge connection, support details, section, bevels, drops and overhang. For unequal pitches or a non-square corner, do not use the equal-pitch shortcut.
